3 years old – Language acquisition in young children passes through different stages. The “Pre-speech” or silent period is the time children discover a linguistic code. They practice matching a vocal expression to an object, an emotion, an action etc. They hear and reproduce new sounds and learn to discriminate them and use them consciously. This phase requires repetitive and simple modeling. Sustained with concrete familiar language.
Children are able to: observe, locate, label, match and show.
4 years old – The “Telegraphic”, early speech production phase characterizes this stage. Learners have been exposed to a great number of words. They imitate conversation by using single words. They produce words in isolation and respond with one/two word answers or short phrases. Indicate comprehension physically. Learn to communicate by putting words in short phrases and questions. They can match a vocal expression to an object, an emotion, an action and use words to expand their knowledge. Children are able to: name, recall, draw, point out, list.
5 years old – The “Speech Emergence” phase characterizes this age group. By this stage, learners have been exposed to a great number of words and learn to communicate by putting the words in short phrases and questions. They may not be grammatically correct but are understandable. This is an important stage during which learners gain greater comprehension and begin to use the second language in structured and unstructured school activities. They can match a vocal expression to an object, an emotion, an action and use words to expand their knowledge.
Children are able to: tell, describe, compare, question and dramatize.
